Classes
Hawaiian Language, Culture, History & Legends
Course Description: This course will be taught using the Kumu Honua Mauli Ola philosophy adapted from the ‘Aha Punana Leo. This philosophy expresses in words what Hawaiian people have lived and known for centuries. It explains the formation of Mauli (identity) due to the influence of three factors:
1. the Honua (environment) in which we exist;
2. the three Piko (connective locations on the body) that define who we are; and,
3. the four aspects of identity: ‘Olelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian Language), ‘Ike Ku’una Hawai’i (Traditional Hawaiian Knowledge), Pili ‘Uhane Hawai’i (Hawaiian Spirituality), and Lawena Hawai’i (Hawaiian Physical Behavior).
You’ll learn basic Hawaiian words and phrases (colors, body parts etc.). You’ll also learn a chant written specifically for this course, and a few other pule (Hawaiian prayers). You’ll also be introduced to a few Hawaiian legends, and take a glance at Hawaiian poetry. This course is designed to be both fun and educational.
