Using Windows 7: Finding Out What You Don't Know

Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7, has a lot in common with its predecessors, Windows XP and Windows Vista, but it’s also got new features and new ways of doing old tasks. Come join us for this open discussion forum with our resident Windows guru, Rick Casey, to learn the “Ins and Outs” of Windows 7. If you’ve ever just wanted to “Ask the experts” here’s your chance.

This class is designed as an open ended forum meaning it has a loose structure for the agenda and will be broken into two week segments. The topics will be proposed by the attendees or the forum leader. We’ll assume the students have some Windows experience such as knowing how to use the mouse and where to launch their programs from the START Menu so this will leave us free to learning how to:

• Create custom toolbars for your desktop that speed access to your most favorite places and programs
• Learn keyboard shortcuts for efficiency
• Mouse and Menu customizations
• Learning the file system. Where actually are My Documents, Programs, Menus, Music and Pictures stored?
o What are hidden files and folders and how do I find them
• Have a large LCD, learn how to arrange your windows
• Get familiar with external devices like cameras, portable drives, smart phones, and media players.
• Learn about basic maintenance tools and how to configure them.
• And explore some great third party applications
• If the class is interested we’ll explore Windows’ networking features
• In one topic we’ll discuss using your browser better
o Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome
• Earning to Search better both Online and Locally on your PC.

We can’t cover all these topics in one or even two weeks but we’ll try to tackle at least one of them each week. Because this is a student demands class we’ll let the attendees prioritize the weekly topics.

Students are welcome to bring their own laptops or use the school desktops.
